On Thursday, November 21st, KLR hosted its annual CPR Skills Day at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds, an event designed to immerse students in hands-on experiences and essential skills for careers in the medical field. This year’s event brought together students from local high schools—including Hamilton Heights, Fishers, Tipton, Sheridan, Hamilton Southeastern, Westfield, Noblesville and Options—offering them the opportunity to explore a variety of medical professions.
Throughout the day, students rotated through 10-minute sessions at different booths, each hosted by a community partner. These hands-on activities allowed students to gain practical experience and insights into various health care fields. Notable highlights included:
- Optum: Students practiced Pulse Oximetry, learning how to measure blood oxygen levels.
- Riverview Health: Participants engaged in blood drawing exercises using a fake arm, took blood pressure, and practiced administering injections using a small apparatus.
- PetVet 365: Students participated in Animal CPR training, expanding their knowledge beyond human medical care.
- Benchmark Physical Therapy: Students tested each others range of motion with a goniometer and conducted balance tests.
- Clean Slate: Students learned about becoming Certified Medical Assistants (CMAs) and working in addiction medicine. They also participated in a mock urine screening.
- Noblesville FD/EMT: Students practiced CPR, ventilation and AED use, gaining valuable experience in emergency medical procedures.
In addition to these community partners, KLR’s own staff members were present with booths focused on Pharmacy, Dental, Veterinary and Soft Skills, which included mock interview practice.
The event was further distinguished by the presence of Mayor Jensen, who kicked off the day by welcoming students and highlighting the significance of hands-on learning opportunities. The CPR Skills Day proved to be an invaluable opportunity for students to explore diverse career paths in the medical field, helping them make informed decisions about their future careers. KLR and The Pursuit Institute are grateful to the community partners who made this event possible.
