Empowering Young Women in the Medical Field: A Glimpse into the Journey of Women Leaders

In the realm of the medical field, there are many incredible women leaders and today we’re shining a spotlight on two such trailblazers that partner with The Pursuit Institute – Katie Reigelsperger, the CEO and Founder of KLR Medical Certification Training School, and Siminda Rasnake, Clinic Manager and Director of the
Ophthalmic Technician Training Institute. Their inspiring journeys serve as an example of empowerment for young women aspiring to carve their own paths in the medical industry.

A Journey of Resilience and Empowerment

Katie’s journey in the industry began after obtaining her pharmacy technician certification. Through active engagement with students and sharing her personal journey of building the KLR Medical Certification Training School from the ground up, she aims to inspire young women to pursue successful careers in the medical field. She is especially passionate about reaching out to those who might face specific hurdles such as financial hardships or challenging home lives, instilling in them the belief that they too can achieve their professional goals, regardless of any obstacles they may encounter.

Essential Skills for Success

When asked about the important characteristics or skills that women should have in the industry, Katie emphasized that resilience is key, as the medical field can be demanding and challenging. Additionally, strong communication skills are crucial for effectively interacting with patients, colleagues and health care professionals. Attention to detail is another vital trait, particularly in roles such as pharmacy technicians and medical assistants, where accuracy is paramount. Finally, a commitment to ongoing learning and professional development is essential in a field that is constantly evolving.

The Importance of Women’s Contributions

She stressed the invaluable and essential role of women’s contributions to the medical field. “Diversity of perspective fosters innovation and ensures that health care services are tailored to meet the diverse needs of patients. Women bring unique insights and experiences to the table, enriching the industry with their perspectives and enhancing the quality of care provided,” she explained.

Overcoming Challenges and Looking Ahead

Despite significant progress, women in the medical field still face challenges such as gender bias, unequal opportunities for advancement and work-life balance issues. However, she is optimistic about the future, as she sees increasing awareness and efforts to address these issues. Initiatives promoting gender equality and diversity in the workplace, as well as mentorship programs for women in health care, are helping to create a more inclusive and supportive environment.

Influential Women in the Medical Field

For students looking to research influential women in the field, she recommends pioneers such as Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States and Florence Nightingale, who revolutionized nursing and health care practices. Additionally, contemporary figures like Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, who played a pivotal role in exposing the Flint water crisis, serve as inspirations for women aspiring to make a difference in the medical field.

Katie Reigelsperger’s journey and insights serve as an inspiration for young women looking to make their mark in the medical field. Her story is a testament to the power of resilience, the importance of women’s contributions to the industry, and the potential for overcoming challenges to achieve professional success.

A Journey of Growth and Empowerment

Siminda’s journey in the industry began as an ophthalmic technician. Through an at-home study course and hands-on experience within an Ophthalmology practice, she earned her Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) credentials. After two years with her COA, she received her Ophthalmic Surgical Assistant credentials, followed by her Certified Ophthalmic Technician credentials. Today, she stands as a beacon of inspiration for young women in the field, leading the way as a Clinic Manager and Director of the Ophthalmic Technician Training Institute.

The Power of Empathy

When asked about the important characteristics or skills that women should have in the industry, Siminda emphasized the importance of empathy. “Ophthalmology deals with vision and eyesight is precious. Patients are scared when they come in for a problem with their vision. Although that problem may seem minor to us in the field, it is major to the patient,” she explained.

The Need for Women in the Field

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 77.6% of the health care industry comprises women. However, the number of ophthalmic technicians has been on a steady decline, primarily because it is an unknown profession. With the Ophthalmic Industry projecting a demand increase of 24%, Siminda stressed the need for women in the field for it to grow at the rate of our eye care needs.

Overcoming Challenges and Looking Ahead

The biggest challenge in the field, according to Siminda, is finding the right programs to gain the knowledge and experience needed for employment. Outside of traditional college, there has never been a program geared toward students entering the workforce. The Ophthalmic Technician Training Institute aims to address this gap, with a goal to put the industry on the map for both young women and men alike, without the debt gained in traditional college.

Influential Women in Ophthalmology

For students looking to research influential women in the field, Siminda recommends Georgiana Dvorak Theobald, M.D., and Sergina M. Flaherty COMT, OSC, CTC, (F)ATPO, who have made significant contributions to the industry.

Siminda Rasnake’s journey and insights serve as an inspiration for young women looking to make their mark in the field of Ophthalmology. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, empathy, and the importance of women’s contributions to the industry.
